Hanz Schwanz grew up in the mid-18th Century in the Holy Roman Empire. As a young adult, he developed his own beer which was received with poor praise due to its reduced alcohol content and lack of flavor. Unfazed, he decided to pack his bags and head off to the British North American Colonies in 1776. However, unbeknownst to him, there was a civil war within thirteen of these British Colonies. Seeing a potential opportunity here, he started producing beer for the Continental Army where they were suffering severe supply shortages due to the war.
This “lighter” beer kept the soldiers sober during pivotal battles giving them an edge over the ale drinking British. By 1783, freedom was won. However, Schwanz Light Beer sales dipped significantly due to a lack of demand and the increased supply of his competitors producing a more flavorful beer. This was not the end of Schwanz Light Beer.
The beer continued to be produced from generation to generation. It even continued to be produced during prohibition due to the authority’s not considering it to be ‘beer’ because of its lower alcohol content. While all of the competition was forced to shut down and never return, even after prohibition, Schwanz Light became America’s beer of choice for a generation who were not accustomed to rich and flavorful brews. Today, Schwanz Light continues its traditions and is known as the beer that won our freedom!
